Introduction to Botanical Illustration

Course Description:

This exciting new three-day workshop will cover the basics of botanical illustration in graphite, ink, colored pencil, and watercolor. Amid Tin Mountain's scenic setting in the White Mountains we will explore conventional uses and effects of each medium and technique. Indoors, our plant subjects will be provided; outdoors, we'll see what we may find! Relaxed sessions, daily demos, and plenty of individual attention. Instructor Bio: Helen Byers is an artist and educator who is active in several genres, including botanical drawing and painting, natural history illustration, observational drawing, and landscape painting. Her background includes college-level teaching of art and literature, art journalism, book illustration, and a 25-year career in educational writing and editing.

Helen’s work is held in various private collections and has been exhibited on both coasts. She regularly teaches botanical art in Massachusetts (at Tower Hill Botanic Garden and other venues) and New Mexico (at Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat Center). She is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, the New England Society of Botanical Artists, the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, the Concord Art Association of Massachusetts, and the Harvard Museums of Natural History.
